Watch this video and answer the following questions:

1) Does the worker know that there are hazardous materials around him - Yes/No?

Yes, I think He knows.

2) What category does the hazardous material fall under?

Those materials are flammable.

3) Using this image (click here), what are some basic handling procedures for the category you chose in question

  • keep away from heat, combustible materials and oxidizing materials.
  • Do not smoke
  • keep container dry and cool
  • Store in a designated fire-prof  area

4) Was it wrong for the boss to rip up the employee's suggestion to get safety cabinets? Why or why not?

Yes, Because he caused that accident. If he had accept the employee's suggestion, it would never have happened.

5) How did the employee make his workplace a safer place to work?

I think he read all the manual and he reported to his boss, and showed that is unsafe..

Activity 1

Watch this video and write a summary of the video in 1 paragraph which includes the 5 points below. I'm looking for what connection you can make between the video and what you've learned about your rights and responsibilities in terms of safety as a worker in Canada.

1) What the incident that occurred was
2) What Clera did wrong (regarding working a new machine)
3) What Clera should have done
4) Your rights and responsibility for safe work in Canada
5) How the video made you feel overall

Clera was imprudent about her security and didn't report to her supervisor that she didn't know how to use those machine. She cut her finger and I think she can avoided this accident.  She needed to training and make sure that she knows how to use those machine before to use.  She must to use all security equipments like, goggles, gloves, uniform, mask.. This video makes me feel terrible because she was imprudent and she didn't understand what her friend says.. Her friend warned but she didn't accept.

Task 2:
Write a short story on anything you want to share with the class; you have to use at least 10 phrasal verbs and 10 preposition that you have just learnt on your story.

Should rich countries forgive all debts for poor countries?

In my opinion, sometimes rich countries are violent to take back their money or resources. I think it is terrible because in most situations, poor countries are at war or in bad positions. When a rich country is in a great position, I think it's important to help out others countries but I don't think they should give away all debits, just wait for better opportunities.
Some countries are dishonest and steal money from rich countries. They need to have a conscience about the world's situations and not exploit their bad positions to receive help or some money.
I know, the most poor countries have plenty of petrol, gas or land but there are too much corruption by government and little investment in education, heath and security.
In Brazil, for example, there are many natural resources such petrol, nature, trees and water, however the government doesn't make investments and steals from the population with large amount in taxes.
I think the world is lost, there isn't escape and future for us. Nobody think about world's situation and each one look at their own problems, never pay attention to global problems. Finally, in my opinion, all people and countries should think over and care for poor people and poor countries but the most important is doing something to hep them, we can't pull out the rest of world. We need to remember that the world is only one!

Task 2

Write an email to a friend here advising him/her on how to move on from Stage Two to Stage Three. List all the suggestions or recommendation you can propose to them.

Hi my friend!
How are you? I hope you are nice!
I studied about culture shock in my English class today, so I would like to explain some important things.

You are not alone, I can help you if you want to help yourself.  I think you should improve your English or maybe, find a  part time job.. this is important to keep your mind full.  Sometimes, we need to go out and enjoy the life, make friends and see beautiful places! This country is amazing, there are many things to do..

Maybe, you should find anything that you like and enjoy! Don’t continue complaining.. make your life better!
You can do this, I know!

Task 1:

Write a two-three paragraph essay describing your experience with culture shock, then list the ways you have personally done or will do or overcome it. Try to answer these questions:
1.                   Did you know about culture shock before?
2.                   How did you feel about reading on that topic?
3.                   Was learning about culture shock in class helpful for you?

When I came to Canada I had  learned about Canadian Culture to minimize the culture shock.  I was so excited to move and I really enjoyed my experience here. I knew that I will have to study more and improve my English if I want to be a success person.

In this activity, I learned about the progress that you do after move to other country with another culture. I think I am in stage 1 or 3, because I really enjoy my life in Canada and I have a positive idea face difficulties. However, I know, Canada is not perfect..  There are some problems, but I want to love this country as well as I love Brazil.. So, I see the best things here and sometimes, I forget the bad things.

I think the best is yet to come..  there are many ways to be happy and I’m finding it mine.

It was important to learn this topic in class because everybody here is in this situation.. everybody had the similar problems  when moved to Canada. Some people less, some people more, but everybody passed for  this.
Good morning, everyone,

How to Work Well in Canada is our theme this week. Trying to observe and understand culture is like trying to observe and understand an iceberg. Anyone who is either looking for a job or starting out a new job will require some time to figure out the expectations, culture, and customs of any or prospective workplace.

Task 1:

Look up the meanings of the vocabulary words below.
Aggressive                                     equality                                       rituals
Annoyed                                       minimize                                       task
Collaborative                                 oblivious                                     valuable
Customs                                         promptness                                values
Embarrassment

Task 2:

Use at least five of these vocabulary words to write an email to a friend describing to him/her the Canadian culture.

Hi Louise, how are you? I hope you are great!

My live in Canada is good, in Canada there are 4 seasons and now, we are in the winter.. Some people don’t like the winter  and hate snow, however, I  love winter and I don’t have problems about that. I think  you won’t have problems too.

Contrary to  Brazil, the people here are collaborative and polite..  There is equality between the sexes and racial equality.. The government minimize  social difference and they work for  the  population. The rate of violence is low, you fell safe.. This is amazing!  You can walk or ride the bicycle without worrying.. The people are not aggressive on the traffic, never  scream  or honk.

I’m sure that you’ll love this country.

I will wait for you!
